Agriculture and the 260-day count

In “The Origin of the Maya Calendar,” Paulino Romero Conde proposed that the Tzolk’in developed from the practical timetable of maize cultivation. His argument begins with the milpa, a rotational system of clearing, planting, tending, and harvesting that has sustained Maya communities for generations.

Romero Conde treated the agricultural cycle not as a single planting date but as a series of organized tasks. Selecting land, cutting vegetation, burning the plot, sowing maize, weeding, guarding the crop, harvesting, and storing grain all required attention to season and elapsed time. In his reading, the need to coordinate these tasks encouraged a formal count of days.

Thirteen twenties

The theory focuses on the structure 13 × 20. A sequence of twenty named days combined with thirteen numerical coefficients produces 260 unique day designations. Romero Conde associated that interval with the time from key stages of maize cultivation through harvest and storage.

The name Tzolk’in is commonly glossed as an ordering or distribution of days. In Romero Conde’s interpretation, its sequence was both a practical measure and a framework that could acquire ritual meaning. Repetition made tasks predictable; named days made the sequence memorable and communicable.

From seasonal observation to larger counts

The essay suggests that longer observation revealed the difference between a 260-day working cycle and the return of the seasons. A solar year of about 365 days could be organized as eighteen groups of twenty days plus five additional days. In Long Count calculation, a related period of eighteen twenties produced the 360-day tun.

Once the 260- and 365-day cycles were coordinated, their combinations repeated after 18,980 days. The resulting Calendar Round could situate anniversaries, ceremonies, and remembered events across a span close to fifty-two solar years.

What the theory helps us ask

Whether or not the Tzolk’in began exactly as Romero Conde proposed, the essay raises a useful question: how do systems of time grow from lived practice? Calendars are not only abstract grids. They connect observation, labor, ritual, memory, and social coordination.

The survival of the 260-day count in parts of the Maya world also cautions against treating it only as a relic. Its meanings have changed across places and centuries, and no single origin story can account for every later use.
