About Maya Calendar

The Maya World Studies Center

Maya Calendar is an educational project of the Maya World Studies Center—Centro de Estudios del Mundo Maya S.C.P.—based in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico.

01

Our purpose

The Maya World Studies Center is dedicated to the study of the Maya and to sharing knowledge of Maya history and culture. Its work is intended for a broad international audience and, especially, for Maya communities.

The Center approaches this work across disciplines, bringing together calendrical studies, history, archaeology, writing, mathematics, astronomy, and cultural traditions.

02

Research and education

Research is shared through conferences, seminars, publications, and educational media so that knowledge about the Maya can reach a wide audience.

Maya Calendar continues that educational purpose with an interactive date converter and introductions to the Tzolk’in, Haab, Long Count, numerical notation, glyphs, monuments, and historical context.

03

A wider community

Although the Center is based in Mérida, the material presented through its projects has also drawn on contributors and collaborators in other parts of the world.

The Maya are a living and diverse people. Understanding their ancient cities and inscriptions is one part of a much longer cultural history that continues across the Maya region today.
